Wayne Weekly “Minimal Cheering…Powerful Hearing”
Written by Wayne Taylor on July 26, 2019
Well, the Governor didn’t show, and for that matter neither did the mayor, town supervisor, street superintendent…not even the local dog catcher.
There were no brightly colored balloons, no ribbon to be cut, no cheese and crackers or pastry dainties. No marching band to play The Stars and Stripes forever. No fireworks, no hot air balloons, no neon signs, no 100 voice church choir, no fancy ball room.
Mike Dwinell, our chief engineer, and myself stood inside a 90 some odd degree metal shipping container, the kind you see on barges on the St Lawrence, or freight trains. There we were surrounded by a couple of transmitters, equipment racks, and yards of cables, conduit, and wires. As Mike installed some equipment in racks and made the proper connections, I stood by making myself available to Mike should he need a tool or piece of equipment from the SUV, while at the same time directing a few prayers up to Heaven.
I watched our engineer as he hussled from one side of the equipment rack to the other. I watched as Mike pushed buttons that made LEDs flicker and move back and forth. Just when I somehow expected some big countdown to throw some massive, important looking switch somewhere recessed on the transmitter, Mike looked at me and said “Do you want to hear (us) out in the SUV on its radio?”
That was it. I felt a kinship to the coming rapture of the church, “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye…” One instant Albany was void of the Mars Hill Network, the next…it was present.
We were on the air with no real fanfare. All of a sudden Mars Hill had become part of the radio landscape in the Capitol District of NY.
Mike and I were cautiously excited, the Mars Hill staff back in Syracuse were anxiously waiting for any further instructions from the transmitter site. This was the joyful occasion we had been waiting for since all the hubbub began in January. Our hearts were grateful as we stepped back and vividly realized that WMHH was on the air and that God had entrusted the ministry to acquire yet another outlet to proclaim the eternal Word of God.
