CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 22, 2024
IN ACCEPTING HIS PARTY’S NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT LAST THURSDAY NIGHT, DONALD TRUMP MIGHT HAVE BENEFITTED FROM SHAKESPEARE’S LINE IN HAMLET: “BREVITY IS THE SOUL OF WIT.”
THE FIRST 30 MINUTES OF HIS TOO-LONG 93 MINUTE ADDRESS WERE RIVITING. HE DESCRIBED WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE SHOT IN THE EAR. HE SAID IF THE BULLET HAD BEEN JUST A LITTLE MORE TO THE RIGHT HE WOULD NOT BE THERE, BUT DEAD.
ADVANCE WORD SAID THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A UNITY SPEECH. IT WAS FOR A WHILE, THEN IT DEVOLVED INTO A STUMP SPEECH WITH VARIOUS GRIEVANCES WE HAVE HEARD BEFORE. IT WASN’T THAT HE WAS WRONG ABOUT MANY OF THEM. IT WAS JUST THAT WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE THIS WOULD BE AN OPTIMISTIC ADDRESS AND A CALL FOR UNITY. OTHERS MADE THAT POINT, BUT NOT TRUMP. I GUESS HE CAN’T HELP HIMSELF.
HE MENTIONED HE BELIEVES GOD SPARED HIS LIFE, BUT FOR WHAT PURPOSE? HE MIGHT HAVE TOLD US. RONALD REAGAN DID IN HIS DIARY AFTER HE RECOVERED FROM AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT.
IN THE END THE SPEECH WON’T MATTER. TRUMP IS LEADING IN MANY STATES AND THE DEMOCRATS ARE IN DISARRAY. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE, THOUGH, TO HEAR THE FORMER AND PERHAPS FUTURE PRESIDENT RISE ABOVE THE TYPICAL RHETORIC AND GIVE US SOMETHING MORE. I’M CAL THOMAS.
