THE MAUI TRAGEDY

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 21, 2023

WHEN A DISASTER OF ANY KIND OCCURS, YOU CAN EXPECT A LOT OF FINGER-POINTING AND SHIFTING, OR DENYING BLAME. SUCH IS THE CASE WITH THE DEVASTATING FIRES IN MAUI IN WHICH MORE THAN 100 HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED DEAD WITH MANY MORE MISSING AND BILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF PROPERTY DESTROYED.

ACCORDING TO THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, THE BLAME FOR THE FIRES WAS NOT JUST THE TYPHOON AND HEAVY WINDS, BUT THE POWER COMPANY.

THE UTILITY HAD STUDIED CALIFORNIA’S PLANS TO REDUCE FIRES, BUT AFTER FOUR YEARS OF STUDYING AND INVESTING ONLY $250 THOUSAND IN PROJECTS, IT DID LITTLE ELSE. LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED IN WHICH IT IS CLAIMED THE POWER COMPANY DID LITTLE TO PROTECT ITS POWERLINES WHICH APPEAR TO HAVE SNAPPED AND IGNITED THE FIRES.

THIS IS TYPICAL BEHAVIOR BY TOO MANY CORPORATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS, WHICH OFTEN IGNORE SOLUTIONS AND KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD, HOPING THEY WON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD COST THEM MONEY, VOTES, OR THEIR JOBS.

PRESIDENT BIDEN ISN’T HELPING MUCH. HE HAS PROMISED ONLY $700 PER HOUSEHOLD, AN AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT WILL DO NOTHING TO RE-BUILD A HOUSE THAT WAS LOST.

THE BIGGEST TRAGEDY IS THAT IT APPEARS THESE FIRES COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. I’M CAL THOMAS.
