A statewide demonstration to oppose the intrusion of males into girls’ sports has been scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024.
On that day, students at New York high schools intend to conduct a walkout. The event is being referred to as Walk Off for Fairness Day.
Walk Off for Fairness Day has been organized by The Coalition to Protect Kids, an organization that formed to fight the passage of the pro-LGBT Proposal One that will appear on New Yorkers’ general election ballots this November. If Proposal One is approved, it could form the basis for court cases that would advance and entrench the radical gender ideology contained in New York’s laws and policies. That radical gender ideology is on full display in the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) (also known as the Bathroom Law), the 2019 state law that gave “transgender” persons access to opposite-sex facilities in public places. It is also on display in the 2023 Safe Haven Law that “protect[s] access to transition-related medical care for transgender minors” from other states. It is on display in the New York State Education Department’s 2023 “transgender” guidance document that directs public school personnel to hide students’ “transgender” identities from their parents and to allow “transgender” students to use opposite-sex facilities. It is on display in New York Attorney General Letitia James’s recent legal challenge to a Nassau County law that bars males from competing in women’s and girls’ sporting events on county-owned property. Radical gender ideology is also on display in proposed state regulations that would allow boys who claim to be “transgender” to compete in girls’ sports; in fact, those same regulations would even allow non-“transgender” boys to compete in girls’ sports in certain circumstances.
According to the New York Post, New York State Conservative Party Chairman Gerry Kassar commented that “‘[it’s] hard to believe we’re even having the conversation that [girls’] sports would be for anyone other than girls.’” We agree. Nevertheless, that conversation is here, and Christian New Yorkers should not shy away from it. Allowing teenaged boys to compete in girls’ interscholastic sports events is unfair (and sometimes even unsafe) because puberty gives boys undeniable advantages over girls in size, speed and strength. This fact is a major reason why girls’ sports exist in the first place. Beyond the issue of fairness, however, there is a question of integrity. Identifying oneself a member of the opposite sex does not make it so. The truth is that God created humankind male and female (Genesis 1:27). Science confirms this Biblical truth; the reality of our God-given gender identities is written in every cell of our bodies. Calling a boy a girl and letting him participate in girls’ sports is, quite simply, dishonest.
For reasons of honesty, safety, and fairness, Christians should—with patience, with civility, and with Christian charity—resist efforts to allow males to compete in girls’ sports.
