(SRN NEWS) – California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has called for state lawmakers to convene a special session in December. He wants legislation to safeguard unfettered abortion and the LGBT agenda in state policy ahead of the beginning of President Trump’s second term. Governors and lawmakers in other states controlled by Democrats are planning to do the same. Newsom says he wants to preserve California’s status as a destination for women in pro-life states to seek abortions. He also wants to preserve the right of children to undergo sex-change operations.
Five years ago the Satanic Temple here in the United States made headlines when it was designated as a church. Now a similar organization in Chile, a conservative country where half of its population of 18 million identifies as Catholic, is asking the government to recognize it as a religious association. In order to join Chile’s Temple of Satan, applicants must choose a new name — normally that of a demon or fallen angel — with which they will be identified inside the Temple and among other associates. Experts say Chile is suffering a crisis of faith.
An expensive campaign by abortion advocates for state supreme court seats has yielded mixed results. Candidates backed by abortion groups won seats in Montana and Michigan in the election. At the same time, Republicans expanded their majority on Ohio’s court. Groups on both the right and left spent millions in the leadup to the election. Experts say the spending shows how much the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe versus Wade has transformed state court races, as it put the issue of abortion back on the states to decide.
Questions about sexual orientation and gender identity are on track to be on the questionnaire for the most comprehensive survey of American life by 2027. Census Bureau officials say the new questions on the American Community Survey will show up on questionnaires in three years, with the data from those questions available the following year. Respondents can provide a write-in response if they don’t like the gay or lesbian, straight or bisexual options. They can also select male, female, transgender, nonbinary or write-in something else.
