A judge in Ohio says a state law that bars sex-change operations on children can go into effect. The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio says it will file an immediate appeal. The law bans surgeries and hormone therapies for kids, unless they are already receiving such therapies and it is deemed a risk to stop by a doctor. The Franklin County judge upheld the law after it was challenged by the ACLU. The measure also bans male athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. It was passed by the legislature in January.

Women’s boxing at the Paris Olympics has highlighted the problems transgenderism causes when trying to enforce eligibility rules for women’s sports. Part of the problem is the International Olympic Committee’s decision to use testosterone levels — not an athlete’s chromosomes — as the determining factor. At least two female boxers, who were disqualified from competition a year ago, have been fighting at the Paris Games and their opponents have been complaining.  Allowing men to compete against women in combat sports is particularly dangerous.
August 2024 marks the 10-year anniversary of ISIS’ take over of Iraq, during which thousands of Christians and other people from non-Muslim communities were killed in the city of Mosul, and the surrounding areas.  Iraq’s Assyrian Christians, who belong to a native Mesopotamian community consisting of early converts to Eastern Orthodoxy, suffered greatly. In Mosul, ISIS marked Christian homes and either killed those inside, drove them out, or forced them to pay a tax historically levied upon non-Muslims.  The exact death toll may never be known.
Harrison Butker is not backing down. With NFL training camps underway, members of the media are again questioning the Kansas City Chiefs kicker about comments he made during a college commencement speech in May. Butker, who describes himself as a conservative Catholic, says he stands behind what he said then. During the speech the three-time Super Bowl champion assailed Gay Pride month and President Biden’s stance on abortion. Butker also accused some Catholic leaders of pushing the LGBT agenda.
