A Nigerian bishop in the United Methodist Church has resigned from his position in protest of the denomination’s stance on homosexuality. The UMC has been split after allowing same-sex marriage. In a letter, Nigerian Bishop John Wesley Johanna wrote that he and all the delegates in the Nigerian Episcopal Area were leaving the UMC and joining the more conservative Global Methodist Church. He said they could not remain in a church where homosexuality is “celebrated.”
A 16-year-old Brazilian skateboarder celebrated her Christian faith after winning a bronze medal at the Olympics in Paris. Rayssa Leal used sign language to quote from the Gospel of John. She signed that Jesus is “the way and the truth and the life.” Olympic organizers continue to take heat for last week’s opening ceremony which featured drag queens and a controversial depiction of the Last Supper, which offended many Christians.
Texas has sued the Biden administration over a federal program that provides contraceptives to teenagers without parental consent. At issue is the Title Ten program which gives minors access to confidential contraception. A Texas judge ruled that parents’ approval was required, but the Biden administration issued a new rule that prevents Title 10 providers from requiring the consent of parents or guardians.
A sewing ministry at a Tucson, Arizona, church has made over 15-thousand dresses for young girls around the world. The “Dress a Girl” sewing group started more than a decade ago at the Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene providing dresses and a message of God’s love to girls in multiple countries. In addition to monthly sewing sessions, the ministry holds an annual sew-a-thon every November, which attracts hundreds of people.
