(SRN NEWS) –
The leader of an historic church in downtown Dallas nearly destroyed by a fire says church officials plan to rebuild the iconic structure. First Baptist Dallas senior Pastor Robert Jeffress says insurance will cover the costs. The Victorian-style red brick church is a Texas Historic Landmark, built in 1890. It now stands as a charred shell, with its stained glass windows ruined and virtually everything inside its brick walls destroyed.  Jeffress says “If we allow that thing to remain in ruins, it will look to the whole world like we’ve been defeated by the evil one.”
Some church leaders in San Antonio are participating in a unique project that trains them to serve as mental health counselors. Under a Harvard Medical School pilot program, they will work as interns before counseling on their own and will refer more serious cases to medical providers. By the end of the year, the initial group of 10 clergy and church members will be able to deliver services independently and then help train another cohort of religious leaders. The project aims to help faith communities support mental wellness.
Kansas isn’t enforcing a new law requiring abortion providers to ask their patients why they want to terminate their pregnancies. The pause comes as a lawsuit proceeds against the rule and other, older requirements. For not enforcing the law, the state will get an extra four months to develop its defense of the challenged restrictions ahead of a trial now delayed until June 2025. Attorneys for the state and for abortion clinics challenging the law signed off on the deal.  Kansas doesn’t ban most abortions until the 22nd week of pregnancy.
Republican Governor Chris Sununu (suh-NOO-noo) of New Hampshire has signed a bill to keep males off of female sports teams. His action adds the state to nearly half in the nation that have adopted similar measures. The bill passed by the Republican-led Legislature would require schools to designate all teams as either girls, boys or coed, with eligibility based on students’ birth certificates “or other evidence.” Sununu says the legislation “ensures fairness and safety in women’s sports by maintaining integrity and competitive balance.”
