(SRN NEWS) – Houses of worship are being added to the toll from the Los Angeles wildfires. Among the thousands of buildings destroyed so far are a half-dozen Protestant churches, a Catholic parish, a mosque and a synagogue. Many members of these congregations are also among the thousands of Angelenos who have lost their homes. As the threat of new fires persists, clergy are being left with the huge challenges of offering comfort and pondering paths toward rebuilding and recovery. At a synagogue in Pasadena, the cantor and three companions were able to rescue the Torah scrolls before flames engulfed the building.
In the wake of Roe versus Wade’s repeal, the battle over abortion is changing. Since most abortions are now carried out using drugs, rather than through surgical procedures, pro-life lawmakers are moving in that direction. Four states — Indiana, Missouri, New Hampshire and Tennessee — have introduced bills aimed at banning abortifacients. Louisiana has classified the drugs as dangerous controlled substances. The Republican attorneys general of Idaho and Kansas are in court trying to roll back federal approvals of one of the pills usually used in abortion.
No state is doing more to try and protect children from transgenderism than Texas. More than 30 bills have been proposed in the state to that end. Other states are following suit and there are calls to go further, including barring Medicaid and other state-funded government programs from spending on sex-change operations for people of any age. The future of some of the laws and proposed measures will likely rest on a Supreme Court ruling expected later this year on whether Tennessee has the right to ban the use of hormones and puberty-blocking drugs on anyone under the age of 18.
With decades of moral decay taking their toll on the U.S., conservative lawmakers across the country are pushing to introduce more Christianity to public school classrooms, providing voluntary Bible classes and urging the posting of the 10 Commandments. The efforts come as President Trump prepares to take office pledging to champion the First Amendment right to pray and read the Bible in school. Mr. Trump and his fellow Republicans also support school choice, hoping to expand the practice of using vouchers to help parents send their children to religious schools.
