A former Cornell University student has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for posting violently threatening statements against Jewish people on campus. Patrick Day was accused by federal officials of posting vows to shoot and stab Jewish people on a Greek life forum. The threats came shortly after Hamas carried out its deadly attack on Israel in October of last year. Day pleaded guilty and in addition to his prison sentence will receive three years of supervised release. Anti-Semitism has exploded on college campuses since last fall.
An unusual situation in New York: A proposed amendment to the state constitution meant to enshrine abortion doesn’t actually include the word “abortion.” Arguments are underway in a lawsuit that Democrats hope will force election officials to insert the word in an explanation of the amendment that voters will see while casting their ballots. The unusual legal effort began weeks after the state Board of Elections chose to use the measure’s technical language verbatim rather than interpret it in its explanation to voters.
A federal judge has ruled that UCLA cannot allow pro-Palestinian protesters to block Jewish students from accessing classes and other parts of campus. The preliminary injunction marks the first time a U.S. judge has ruled against a university over the demonstrations against Israel on college campuses. UCLA argued that it has no legal responsibility over the issue because protesters, not the university, blocked Jewish students’ access to the school. The judge says the school must provide access to buildings on campus to all students.
Further proof of pornography’s infiltration of the internet: A growing number of Olympic athletes admit that they are financing their training through Only Fans, a website that essentially allows people to produce amateur pornography. The International Olympic Committee does not seem concerned about the situation. IOC spokesman Mark Adams says “I would assume that athletes, like all citizens, are allowed to do what they can.” Only Fans has more than 82 million users and in 2022 it made more than one billion dollars.
