A judge says Maine is not violating the constitutional rights of religious schools by requiring them to abide by a state anti-discrimination law to receive taxpayer-funded tuition assistance. But the judge also acknowledged that a higher court will have the final say. The lawsuit is one of two in Maine focusing on the collision between federal and state law. The U.S. Supreme Court has already ruled that Maine cannot discriminate against religious schools in providing tuition assistance. The plaintiffs are expected to appeal this latest decision.
Crews have torn down a Texas church where a gunman killed more than two dozen worshippers in 2017. The crews used heavy machinery to raze the small building in Sutherland Springs even after some families sought to preserve the scene of the deadliest church shooting in U.S. history. A judge last month cleared the way for the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church to be torn down. Authorities say 26 people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn baby, died in the November 5th, 2017, shooting.
Voters in Arizona will get to decide in November whether to add the right to an abortion up to about 24 weeks to the state constitution. The Arizona secretary of state’s office has certified nearly 580,000 signatures supporting the ballot measure. Opponents of the proposed amendment say it goes too far and could lead to unlimited and unregulated abortions in Arizona. Several other states are also putting the question of abortion to their residents on Election Day. Arizona currently has a 15-week abortion ban.
Missouri voters will decide in November whether to amend the state constitution to create a right to abortion. Election officials say an initiative to that end has received more than enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. If approved by a majority of voters, it would reverse the state’s near-total ban on abortions. At least a half-dozen states will be voting on abortion rights this fall, including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada and South Dakota. Two other states might join the list.
