Louisiana’s attorney general is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to overturn the state’s new law requiring the 10 Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom by January 1st. The suit was filed in June by parents of Louisiana public school children with various religious backgrounds who contend the law violates First Amendment language forbidding government establishment of religion and guaranteeing religious liberty. Proponents of the law argue that the Commandments have historical significance.
A Texas church has not one — but two — members aboard the International Space Station. Like many astronauts before them, Barry Wilmore and Tracy Dyson brought along their faith when they launched into space. The two are members of Providence Baptist Church. Dyson told the Bible Project podcast earlier this year that “God uses all of us in pretty neat ways.” Faith has a long history with NASA. The three astronauts aboard Apollo 8 broadcasted their reading from Genesis on Christmas Eve back in 1968.
August 2024 marked the 10-year anniversary of ISIS’ takeover of Iraq, during which thousands of Christians and other people from non-Muslim communities were killed in the city of Mosul, and the surrounding areas. Iraq’s Assyrian Christians, who belong to a native Mesopotamian community consisting of early converts to Eastern Orthodoxy, suffered greatly. In Mosul, ISIS marked Christian homes and either killed those inside, drove them out, or forced them to pay a tax historically levied upon non-Muslims. The exact death toll may never be known.
Harrison Butker is not backing down. With NFL training camps underway, members of the media are again questioning the Kansas City Chiefs kicker about comments he made during a college commencement speech in May. Butker, who describes himself as a conservative Catholic, says he stands behind what he said then. During the speech the three-time Super Bowl champion assailed Gay Pride month and President Biden’s stance on abortion. Butker also accused some Catholic leaders of pushing the LGBT agenda.
