NYGOP Raises Its Parental Rights Voice In Transgender Guidance Debate

Last week, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms (NYCF) commented on the insidious “guidance” document recently released by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) regarding gender identity. In our commentary, we asserted that “the government and the educational establishment in the state of New York have fully embraced left-wing gender ideology and have taken drastic steps to impose it upon students, faculty, staff, and administrators in schools at all grade levels.”

It turns out that we are not the only New Yorkers who are outraged by the gender insanity coming out of NYSED. On June 19, 2023, the New York Republican State Committee (NYGOP) expressed its own displeasure with NYSED’s gender “guidance.” The NYGOP correctly pointed out that “members of the Board of Regents have no regard for the rights of parents to have a say in their children’s education, and instead see themselves as locked in an ideological fight with parents.” NYGOP Chair Ed Cox commented: “‘Rather than focusing on teaching students the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving economy, New York’s education establishment is prioritizing radical gender ideology and gratuitously sexual content for young New Yorkers. The failure to teach basic skills will only hasten the decline in public school enrollment and exodus of families to jurisdictions that place education over ideology.’” Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt (R-North Tonawanda) accused the Board of Regents of “‘pushing a far-left political agenda and undermining parents’ rights,’” and Assembly Republican Leader Will Barclay (R-Pulaski) added that “‘the woke agenda gets more ridiculous by the day.’”
