JFK’S ECONOMIC VIEWS

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY NOVEMBER 21, 2023
TOMORROW IS THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY. MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT HIM, HIS BROTHERS AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS. SOME OF IT IS TRUE AND A LOT OF THE REST HAS BEEN COVERED-UP.
KENNEDY MADE A LOT OF MISTAKES – LIKE THE INVASION OF CUBA THAT LED TO THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS AND NEARLY A NUCLEAR WAR. HIS NUMEROUS AFFAIRS WITH WOMEN, INCLUDING AN ALLEGED SPY FOR EAST GERMANY, WERE IGNORED BY THE MEDIA. THAT WOULDN’T HAPPEN TODAY.
KENNEDY WAS A PRO-GROWTH TAX CUTTER, A POSITION THAT WOULD NOT FIND FAVOR IN THE MODERN DEMOCRAT PARTY. IN A SPEECH TO THE ECONOMIC CLUB OF NEW YORK IN DECEMBER, 1962, KENNEDY SPOKE OF “THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FREE MARKET SYSTEM.” HE BRAGGED ABOUT ECONOMIC GROWTH ON HIS WATCH, THE GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT HAVING RISEN ELEVEN PERCENT. THEN HE ADDED THIS: “IF GOVERNMENT IS TO RETAIN THE CONFIDENCE OF THE PEOPLE, IT MUST NOT SPEND MORE THAN CAN BE JUSTIFIED ON GROUNDS OF NATIONAL NEED OR SPENT WITH MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY.”
I WONDER WHAT KENNEDY MIGHT THINK OF OUR $33 TRILLION DEBT – AND COUNTING – AND THE WAY GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME BLOATDED AND INEFFICIENT?
