Gov. Kathy Hochul Doubles Down On Contempt for Conservative Voters

During Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s ten-and-one-half years as New York’s chief executive, pro-life New Yorkers and other conservatives came to expect that he would subject them to poisonous rhetoric and contemptuous treatment. Unfortunately, since Gov. Kathy Hochul took the reins in 2021, she has followed in Gov. Cuomo’s footsteps. The anti-conservative, anti-life rhetoric remains; it is merely being spoken in a higher voice.

On November 2, 2024, Gov. Hochul directed the following comments at New York voters: “‘If you’re voting for these Republicans in New York, you are voting for someone who supports Donald Trump and you’re anti-women, you’re anti-abortion, and basically, you’re anti-American… You just trashed American values and what our country is all about — over and over.’”

Even other Democrats found the Governor’s comments unacceptable. Former U.S. Rep. Max Rose (D-Staten Island) asserted that Gov. Hochul’s remarks were “‘about as helpful as a severe migraine.’” Rep. Rose added, “‘It’s never a good thing to identify a large segment of voters as un-American.’”

Divisive rhetoric is nothing new from Gov. Hochul. Two years ago, the Governor advised Republican candidates to “‘just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong. OK? Get out of town. Because you don’t represent our values.’”

After Election Day, Gov. Hochul held a press conference with New York Attorney General Letitia James to remind voters of her liberal agenda for the Empire State. The Governor stated that she had created the Empire State Freedom Initiative, “a team of experts from within her administration to develop strategies for protecting New Yorkers from a variety of policy and regulatory threats that could emerge under President-elect Trump.” Specifically, the ESFI is intended to focus on “‘reproductive rights, civil rights, immigration, gun safety, labor rights, LGBTQ rights and our environmental justice.’” Gov. Hochul added, “‘I will work with [President Trump] or anybody, regardless of party, on [the] kind of efforts that I know will benefit the State of New York. However, if you try to harm New Yorkers or roll back their rights, I will fight you every step of the way. New Yorkers are resilient — we fought the first time around and we’ll fight again.’”

It is clear that Gov. Hochul is positioning herself as a liberal counterweight to President Donald Trump and as a voice of dissent from his agenda. What is less clear is whether New York voters will support the course she has taken. As of October 2024, the Governor’s approval rating stands at a paltry 36%. As far as Christian voters are concerned, our course of action is clear: Pray for a change in the Governor’s attitude and perspective, but continue to work against her anti-life agenda.
