COVID Peak Came Earlier, Hit Higher Than Previously Reported

Written by on September 5, 2023

On August 30, 2023, Bill Hammond of the Empire Center for Public Policy released a report entitled “Behind the Curve: The Extreme Severity of New York City’s First Pandemic Wave.” The report reveals startling facts about the COVID-19 pandemic in the Big Apple and makes recommendations about what New York City might do to prepare for future epidemics.

According to Hammond, the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City “began a month or more earlier and spiked six times higher than shown by the available testing data.” Hammond posits that “infection rate likely peaked around March 19, three weeks earlier than previously believed.

Hammond asserts that among 415 countries and regions studied, New York City’s peak 12-week mortality rate was the second-highest in the world (trailing only Mexico City).

Wise governmental leaders would seek to learn past lessons, lest they be repeated.
