Both Parties Promise Big Spending in 2024 Congressional Cycle

Written by on September 5, 2023

Last November, New York’s congressional elections played a major role in determining which party would win control of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Republican Party won a surprising 11 of New York’s 26 congressional districts, helping the GOP acquire a paper-thin House majority. In November 2024, New York may have a similarly large impact on the parties’ fortunes. Both Democrats and Republicans are aware of New York’s significance, and both parties are poised to expend large sums of money on New York’s 2024 congressional races.

Recently, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Schuylerville), chair of the House Republican Conference, announced that she had “convinced her party to flood key swing districts in New York with $100 million in campaign cash.” According to Politico, Republican campaign offices have already opened in key regions of the state. In addition to holding their current districts, the Republican Party is expected to focus on ousting Rep. Pat Ryan (D-Gardiner) in New York’s 18th congressional district.

For their part, House Democrats also have big spending plans in New York; their super PAC reportedly expects to spend $45 million on voter outreach and advertising next year to help House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn) become speaker of the House. Earlier this summer, The Philadelphia Tribune reported that Rep. Jeffries was “installing his own loyalists in key positions as he effectively takes over much of the state party operations that would usually be controlled” by the governor of New York. Furthermore, Democrats hope that the pro-abortion, pro-“transgender” Equality Amendment that is slated to appear on the ballot next fall will motivate members of their party to come out and vote. As Albany Update noted in June, pro-Equality Amendment forces vow to spend $20 million to help pass the Amendment.
