CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JUNE 24, 2024
LAST FRIDAY THE SUPREME COURT RULED 8-1 THAT IN CERTAIN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASES, A PERSON MAY BE TEMPORARILY DEPRIVED OF OWNING A GUN. JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS WAS THE LONE DISSENTER. MOST PEOPLE I SUSPECT WILL AGREE WITH THE RULING, EVEN THOSE WHO ARE PASSIONATE DEFENDERS OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT.
CONSIDER THESE FACTS: NEARLY HALF OF ALL WOMEN KILLED IN THE U.S. ARE MURDERED BY A CURRENT OR FORMER INTIMATE PARTNER, ACCORDING TO THE EDUCATIONAL FUND TO STOP GUN VIOLENCE.
ABOUT 4.5 MILLION WOMEN IN THE U.S. HAVE BEEN THREATENED WITH A GUN AND NEARLY ONE MILLION WOMEN HAVE BEEN SHOT OR SHOT AT BY AN INTIMATE PARTNER.
FURTHERMORE, ONE HALF OF ALL INTIMATE PARTNER HOMICIDES ARE COMMITTED WITH GUNS AND A WOMAN IS FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE MURDERED WHEN HER ABUSER HAS ACCESS TO A GUN.
YES, I AM AWARE OF THE “OPEN THE DOOR” ARGUMENT, THAT IF YOU CEDE GUN RIGHTS TO THE GOVERNMENT THERE WILL BE NO STOPPING THEM AND THEY WILL EVENTUALLY TRY TO CONFISCATE ALL GUNS.
THE COURT’S RULING IS A REASONABLE COMPROMISE, TARGETING BAD MEN AND PROTECTING VULNERABLE WOMEN WHILE PRESERVING THE SECOND AMENDMENT FOR THE LAW-ABIDING. I’M CAL THOMAS.
