Wayne Weekly “Vital Signs”
Written by Teddy on December 21, 2015
Today in our health conscious culture we are familiar with the phrase, “vital signs”. But other “vital signs” are eternally important, such as our spiritual vital signs. Hopefully we are spiritually healthy. God’s Word tell us to examine ourselves to be sure we’re in the faith.
Vital signs played an all important role in the account of the birth of our Savior.
“And this shall be a sign unto you; you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.”
The shepherds keeping watch over their flock by night heard the angelic message that Jesus the Savior had been born in Bethlehem, the city of David. What good news that was to those lowly sheep herders. This vital sign proclaimed direction on where to find Christ the Lord.
The response of the shepherds was “let us go…and see” And we know, that they “found Mary, Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger… as it was told unto them.”
The magi made the long journey by following the miraculous star shining in the east. The star first led the wise men to Jerusalem where the announced:
“…Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”
Herod being told this gathered the chief priests and scribes of the people together and he demanded of them where the Christ should be born. The answer from the religious leaders, “Bethlehem of Judaea”, quoting from the prophet recorded in Micah 5:2. We then discover that the star travelled with the magi, bound for Bethlehem, and stood over the place where Jesus was.
As believers we are vital messengers of the good news to those dwelling in the darkness of night, not unlike the angels heralding the “good tidings of great joy.” As believers we are also vital shining stars showing the human travelers where to find Christ Jesus.
This Christmas season and beyond, let’s declare boldly and shine brightly. Let’s be vital signs to the world.
