(SRN NEWS) – Pope Francis has named Cardinal Robert McElroy of San Diego as the archbishop of Washington, D.C. He is tapping one of his most liberal allies to head the Catholic Church in the nation’s capital just as President Trump is about to begin a second term.  McElroy has harshly criticized the campaign by some U.S. bishops to exclude Catholic politicians who support abortion from receiving Communion.  He has also urged his fellow bishops to deemphasize abortion and focus instead on issues such as racism, immigration and so-called climate change.

Hollywood again put transgenderism front and center at the Golden Globe awards over the weekend.  “Emilia Pérez”, a film about a male drug lord who begins living as a woman, won best film, comedy or musical, elevating its chances at the Oscars in March.  The leading role is played by Spanish actor Karla Sofia Gascon — a man who is living as a woman.  Some critics say Hollywood is ignoring trends in the U.S. and the world that see the public turning against transgenderism and against the diversity, equity and inclusion program in general.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby’s tenure in office officially came to an end yesterday (Monday), after an investigation found that he failed to tell police about serial abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps as soon as he became aware of it. Welby, the head of the Church of England and spiritual leader of the global Anglican Communion, has opted to resign.  Most of his official functions will be delegated to the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell.  The search for Welby’s replacement is expected to take most of this year.

Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers is reviving his plan to enable voters to repeal and create state laws.  He crafted a similar proposal in 2022 for voters to repeal the state’s 1849 abortion ban, but Republicans killed the plan.  It is expected that they will do so this time as well.  Evers claims that the GOP has been ignoring the will of the people by refusing to legalize marijuana, expand abortion and implement gun control measures. Wisconsin is among 24 states that don’t provide a way for people to create or repeal laws without legislative action.
