(SRN NEWS) – A state judge in Montana has temporarily blocked policies that prevented transgender people from changing the sex designation on their birth certificates and driver’s licenses. District Judge Mike Menahan issued his order to put the rule on hold while a lawsuit moves through the courts. The state says that since gender is binary, the alteration of documents will put misinformation into the Montana records system. The ACLU argues that requiring people to carry documents that contradict the identity they have chosen violates their right to privacy.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its Oscar shortlists in 10 categories and transgenderism is front and center. Netflix’s transgender drug-lord drama “Emilia Pérez” was most named, advancing in international feature, original score, original song, sound and hair and makeup. On the documentary shortlist is “Will and Harper”, a movie about actor Will Ferrell and his friend Harper Steele — a man who is now living as a woman. The lists will narrow to five when final nominations are announced on January 17th.
Moravian missionaries named the Pennsylvania city of Bethlehem after the biblical birthplace of Jesus on Christmas Eve in 1741. Nearly 300 years later, Moravians continue celebrating their Christmas season traditions in Bethlehem. They include Nativity scenes, the making of thousands of candles by hand and a song service where worshippers share sweet buns and coffee in their church pews. The Moravian settlements in Bethlehem were recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list as the best preserved of its kind in North America.
A couple has dropped a lawsuit that led the Alabama Supreme Court to rule earlier this year that frozen embryos are human beings who have legal rights. The couple had filed suit after their frozen embryos were destroyed in an accident at a storage facility. The Alabama high court then ruled that under an 1872 law, the couple could pursue wrongful death lawsuits, just as they could for the death of a child who had been born. The decision became a flashpoint in the national debate over abortion all the way through the election in November.
