Syracuse Judge Faces Scrutiny For Same-Sex “Marriage” Stance

Syracuse City Court Judge Felicia Pitts Davis (pictured) is facing a torrent of criticism, including calls for her resignation, following events that occurred at the City Court on November 16, 2024. Syracuse.com has reported that two couples visited the City Court on November 16 to be married. Judge Davis officiated at the wedding ceremony of a bride and groom. Following that ceremony, Judge Davis left the courtroom. Judge Mary Anne Doherty then entered the courtroom and solemnized a “wedding” between two female partners.

So why has this situation generated controversy?

Here’s why: According to unnamed sources, Judge Davis told Judge Doherty that she did not wish to officiate at the same-sex “wedding” because of her religious beliefs.

“The media-driven feeding frenzy surrounding Judge Felicia Pitts Davis is cancel culture at its worst,” said Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director of New York Families Foundation. “What makes this situation so absurd is that the two women who came to the Syracuse City Court on November 16 got exactly what they came for and have no real reason to complain. At the end of the day, though, this manufactured controversy has little to do with them. Rather, it has to do with conformity to liberal orthodoxy. While purporting to be champions of tolerance and inclusion, many liberals display little or no tolerance those whose beliefs do not match their own.”

Dozens of articles on this topic appeared in the news media within 48 hours of the initial Syracuse.com report. Gov. Kathy Hochul, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, and a number of politicians and activists have jumped all over Judge Davis in the media; Gov. Hochul contends that judges should either officiate at same-sex “weddings” or decline to officiate at any weddings at all. Homosexual elected officials have declared that Judge Davis should step down from her elected office. Furthermore, an allegation against Judge Davis has been submitted to the State Commission on Judicial Conduct.

McGuire continued, “Unlike most of the others who have commented on Judge Davis’s situation, I won’t presume to know why she did not officiate at the November 16 same-sex ceremony. What I do know is this: If Judge Davis declined to officiate at a same-sex ceremony based on her Christian faith, she did the right thing and should be commended. No Christian should participate in a ceremony that celebrates any sexually immoral act. To do so would be dishonest.”

“Americans are supposed to respect the rule of law. However, we are also supposed to respect religious freedom and freedom of conscience. Because the Christian community does not condone homosexual behavior, liberals’ demand for the acceptance of all things LGBT has placed religious liberty on the chopping block. Recognizing this, Christians and other people of good will should boldly speak out for religious liberty.”

McGuire concluded, “If Judge Davis did what she did on November 16 for reasons of religious conscience, she should hang in there and fight to keep her job.”
