Transgender Member Sparks U.S. Capitol Debate

On November 20, 2024, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made the following announcement: “‘All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings – such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms – are reserved for individuals of that biological sex.’” The Speaker added, “‘It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol.’”
Speaker Johnson’s announcement followed the recent election of Sarah McBride (born Timothy McBride) to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep.-elect McBride, who was elected to represent the state of Delaware’s at-large congressional district, is slated to become the first member of Congress to openly self-identify as “transgender.” In response to the election of Rep.-elect McBride, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution that would bar members of Congress and congressional staffers from using opposite-sex facilities at the Capitol. Unsurprisingly, given the deep confusion over matters of sex and gender in American politics and society, the proposed resolution generated controversy; one Democratic lawmaker actually called it “‘disgusting.’” Rep. Joe Morelle (D-Irondequoit), a Democratic member of New York’s congressional delegation, said: “‘I think we have a lot of problems in America; I don’t think spending time worrying about the restrooms is an order of priority here. I think Nancy Mace should focus on other things.’”[1] Following the introduction of the Mace resolution, Speaker Johnson announced the new policy on single-sex facilities.
Speaker Johnson is to be commended for implementing his common-sense policy. In response to Rep. Morelle’s comments, New York Families Foundation has this to say: You’re right, Congressman. There are many, many things other than restrooms that need and deserve the attention of Congress. Let’s be honest, though. Who passed laws (which you have supported) that allow men into women-only spaces in the name of civil rights? Who has been teaching public school students the strange notion that they can change their sex? And whose idea was it to force Riley Gaines and many other girls and young women into the unfair (and, at times, unsafe) position of competing against “transgender” males in sports? Conservatives didn’t start the national conflict over sex and gender; liberals did. If the left would stop pushing gender insanity, it wouldn’t be necessary for us to respond. But it is necessary, and we will respond.
Speaker Johnson commented, “‘Let me be unequivocally clear. A man is a man, and a woman is a woman. A man cannot become a woman. But I also believe we treat everybody with dignity. We can do and believe all those things at the same time.’” Thank you, Speaker Johnson, for that timely, appropriate, and godly reminder.
[1] While New York Families agrees with the substance of Rep. Mace’s resolution pertaining to restroom facilities, certain of Rep. Mace’s own comments concerning her resolution were unwise and created a distraction from the issue at hand.
