Transgender Ideology Becomes A Political Liability For Democrats

Election Day 2024 did not go well for the Democratic Party. Former President Donald Trump (R-FL) and U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) defeated Vice President Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) in the race for the White House. Republicans wrested four U.S. Senate seats from the Democrats and will hold a Senate majority beginning in January 2025. Furthermore, Republicans retained control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Following the elections, Democrats and others have identified a variety of possible causes of the setbacks that they experienced at the ballot box. Interestingly, some Democrats have pointed to their own party’s handling of “transgender” issues as one of those causes.
Shortly after Election Day, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) blamed President Trump’s victory on progressives that have pushed for “transgender” rights. “‘The Democrats have to stop pandering to the far left. I don’t want to discriminate against anybody, but I don’t think biological boys should be playing in girls’ sports,’” Rep. Suozzi said. The congressman later suggested that Democrats had turned voters off by supporting “transgender” persons’ intrusion into opposite-sex sports and adopting other far-left positions. “Transgender” advocates responded to Rep. Suozzi’s remarks with anger, insults, and vulgarity.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) expressed a similar view, asserting that Democrats “‘spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face.’” Rep. Moulton noted, “‘I have two little girls, I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.’” After experiencing backlash due to his eminently sensible comments, Rep. Moulton said, “‘This is just everything that’s wrong with this cancel culture. How on Earth are [Democrats] going to win elections if that’s our approach, if we just want to preach down to people and tell them that they’re morally wrong if they don’t meet some strict ideological purity test?’”[1]
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) added that Democrats’ emphasis on “transgender” issues gives Republicans “ammunition.” Rep. Cuellar said, “‘Transgender, pro-choice, I understand that, but the problem is…if [Democrats] think that those are the big issues for the general public in rural America or in South Texas, they’re reading the public wrong.’”
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, has said that the far left of the Democratic Party inadvertently helped President Trump win the 2024 election. According to Gov. Christie, “‘the Democratic Party, from 2017 through 2024, went off the deep end.’” Gov. Christie specifically referred to the Democrats’ position on “transgender” issues, asserting that the Trump campaign’s most effective advertisement was an ad that highlighted Vice President Harris’s support for so-called “sex reassignment surgery” for prisoners and illegal aliens. (The ad stated that “‘“Kamala Harris is for they/them, and Donald Trump is for us.”’”) Gov. Christie added that Democrats’ comments about “transgender” issues and pronouns could cause moderate Democrats to gravitate toward the Republican Party.
Statistics lend support to the notion that Democratic support for transgenderism has become a political liability. A recent survey from AP VoteCast “showed that half of American voters overall, and eight in 10 Trump voters, said support for transgender rights in government and society had gone ‘too far.’” Furthermore, Gallup polls indicate that voter opposition to “transgender” sports participation increased amongst Democrats, Republicans, and independents between 2021 and 2023.
It is heartening to see that at least a few Democrats are rethinking their party’s enthusiasm for all things “transgender” and their party’s recent trend toward rigid, dogmatic leftism. One question, however, is this: If Democrats come to believe that their position on transgenderism hurts them politically, will that motivate them to change it? A related question is: Will the Democrats even consider the possibility that their attitudes and policies toward gender identity cause harm to persons with gender dysphoria and defy God’s creative design?
[1]. Both Rep. Suozzi and Rep. Moulton have previously supported “transgender”-related legislation.
