(SRN NEWS) – A federal judge has heard arguments on whether he should temporarily block a new Louisiana law that requires the 10 Commandments to be displayed in every public-school classroom by January 1st. Opponents say that the law is an unconstitutional violation of separation of church and state. Proponents argue that the measure is not solely religious, but that it has historical significance to the foundation of law in this country. U.S. District Judge John deGravelles (duh-GRAVELS) says he will try to reach a decision by November 15th.

Jews around the world begin celebrating Simchat (SIM-kah) Torah at sundown tonight (Thursday). Customarily, the event is one of the most joyous days of the Jewish calendar, highlighted by exuberant dancing around the Torah. And Jewish leaders say the joy will be felt, despite the fact that Jews are celebrating in the shadow of last year’s Hamas attack on Israel and the following surge in anti-Semitism around the world.  Simchat Torah marks the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings. The highlight is when participants perform the Torah dance.

A new report finds that women living in states with abortion bans obtained the procedure in the second half of 2023 at about the same rate as before the Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade. The report by the Society of Family Planning finds that women in states with bans traveled out of state or had prescription abortion pills mailed to them. The report also found women increasingly used telehealth, as medical providers in pro-abortion states used online appointments to prescribe abortion pills and boost their business.

Hailey Davidson, a man who is living as a woman, shot a round of 78 to begin the second stage of LPGA qualifying this week. This comes amid reports of a letter signed by 275 female golfers. They want top organizations like the LPGA and USGA to repeal policies allowing males to compete in women’s events. The LPGA’s policy allows for players who have had sex-change operations after puberty. However, the LPGA commissioner is conducting a thorough review of the policy and will announce any update before the start of next season.
