Louisiana’s attorney general is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to overturn the state’s new law requiring the 10 Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom by January 1st. The suit was filed in June by parents of Louisiana public school children with various religious backgrounds who contend the law violates First Amendment language forbidding government establishment of religion and guaranteeing religious liberty. Proponents of the law argue that the Commandments have historical significance.
A Texas church has not one — but two — members aboard the International Space Station. Like many astronauts before them, Barry Wilmore and Tracy Dyson brought along their faith when they launched into space. The two are members of Providence Baptist Church. Dyson told the Bible Project podcast earlier this year that “God uses all of us in pretty neat ways.” Faith has a long history with NASA. The three astronauts aboard Apollo 8 broadcasted their reading from Genesis on Christmas Eve back in 1968.
Israel’s Olympic team says athletes have received threats as they compete in Paris. French authorities are investigating. The national cybercrime agency is looking into the leak of some Israeli athletes’ personal data online, which has since been taken down. Anti-Semitism has surged worldwide ever since the Hamas attack on Israel last October.
There’s an unusual gospel outreach taking place in Tennessee. Robert’s Western World is Nashville’s most iconic honky tonk and practically synonymous with country music. But for an hour on Sunday mornings no one can drink alcohol and they can only listen to Christian music. During the Gospel Hour, Pastor Ron Blakely plays guitar while his daughter Mimi Fischer sings on stage to an audience of locals and tourists from across America. Blakely says many have found a spiritual home away from their own churches.
