Wayne Weekly “The Great Escape”

Written by on February 4, 2021

If you’re like me, you’re pretty much homebound due to this awful pandemic the entire world is reeling from. Granted, I do work a full time job and am generally in my office at Mars Hill five days a week, but these days normally my time spent away from the network is at home. There are well spaced out trips to the grocery store. Occasionally I’ll go out for a food pick up. Church attendance in the actual church building is largely fragmented. I think the most consistent time away from my home are the two, sometimes three, daily dog walks!

Chores around the house can keep me busy. I find that radio listening generally is a backdrop for those mundane tasks. Projects, such as fixing a broken picture frame or putting in a new light fixture for my wife are more interesting. Television…well, I must admit, often that is the default. I am not a Facebook or twitter or whatever type of person, so losing myself in social media is not part of my pastime.

Movies are another diversion. I’ve watched more introductions to movies than I care to count. I say “introductions” because I view the first few minutes and then make a decision on whether to devote two hours of my life to something that may mean nothing.

As a Christian, my real “great escape” is my daily devotional time in God’s Word, followed by a short daily devotional that I received at Christmas from my daughter Janelle. After my “quiet time”, I often burrow into a book by a Christian author. Filling my mind with God’s Word and thoughts about God things, brings a needed sense of stability into my life. It offers hope and reassurance that everything is being managed by God for His purposes.

Escape from the everyday life routines can be healthy, if the escape leads you into a healthy haven of rest. God invites us to move close to shore, to dock in His harbor.

Let’s weigh anchor.

Now when the south wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to the shore.

Acts 27:13
