Wayne Weekly “Lost in the Fog”
Written by Wayne Taylor on January 8, 2021
As I sit in my office here at Mars Hill, I am looking out my window overlooking our front yard. We have a blanket of snow on the ground and a blanket of fog in the air. Any more intense and we would have a white out!
I remember studying sometime in my educational experience a poem by Carl Sandburg, a Sweedish-American poet who died in 1967 at 89 years old.
Fog
By Carl Sandburg
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
Such a simple poem, and at first read you may shake your head and say, “I could have written that!”. But, the fact is…you didn’t and either did I.
When you meditate on the words, it’s easy to draw a mental picture of what Mr. Sandburg was seeing or recollecting when he penned, “Fog”. Sometimes I can get lost in picturesque verse.
When reflecting on this past week’s tragic end result of what was to be a peaceful demonstration in our nation’s capital, I can’t help but wonder if many of us were engulfed in a “fog “ that loudly, yet somehow silently, clouded our perception of what is wrong and what is right?
Though the past year’s violent clashes and non-peaceful demonstrations were deafeningly sounded from all forms of media platform…on “little cat feet”, the fog crept into and clouded the perception of many, as the haze shrouded our country’s “harbor and cities”. A whiteout of reasoning and common sense.
The sad truth, though, the fog had not “moved on” before January 6.
By God’s grace, we pray the fog will lift, and in the days ahead we will all see more clearly and focus on the task we have been called to. Let the Church be…the Church!
“…His eyes were opened, His sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.” Mark 8:25
