Wayne Weekly “A Close Call…Sweat on an Angel’s Brow”

Written by on November 23, 2020

The other day while traveling north on Interstate 81 to pick up Tom Herbert and then onto Watertown for a luncheon with area pastors I had a “close call”.

Driving in the middle lane of 81, doing the 65 mph speed limit (give or take) I noticed some kind of truck in the far left lane with its flashers on. It was difficult to tell anything about the vehicle. I really could not judge whether it was stopped or traveling at a slower speed. As I drove I thought to myself, “should I pull over in the far right lane or not?” I could see that the lane was pretty clear…so I decided that I would make the lane change, though I saw no urgency.

A brush with death? Some might think so. Just as I made my way over to the far right lane, the tandem vehicle…yes a big state or county truck with a huge flatbed loaded with who knows what, jackknifed into the middle lane. As I proceeded to drive, I passed the trailer which was now fully across the middle lane.

It was surreal as I gathered my composure and replayed what had just happened in my mind. I quickly realized that if I had not made the decision to move to the right, I would have surely run head on into the “heavy duty” flatbed at nearly 65 mph.

“Thank you God!” ran out of my brain and I believe audibly onto my lips.

I think we all have “close calls” in life. At least we might name them that. Whether God put the thought in my mind to move over into the far lane, or an angel whispered, “Move over Wayne”, I probably won’t know till I am in Heaven’s courtyard. You and I are really fragile creatures. Our guardian angels have quite a busy job I am guessing.  We can take comfort in knowing that our lives are mapped out by God, and knowing that, we can assuredly say…but humbly say… “We are here until God calls us home.”

“Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”                             Hebrews 1:14
