Wayne Weekly “Slipping and Sliding”

The other day my dog was taking me for a walk…well actually the other way around…but I have to wonder. It was early morning and a fresh layer of snow had fallen. What I didn’t know was that beneath that fluff danger lay below.

The weather this winter has been, in my perception, a bit different. Warm, cold, below zero, partial thaw, windy, and then bitter cold again. It almost seems like perpetual winter…just like Narnia! Where the snow was compacted, then partially melted only to freeze again became pools of slick ice. With a fresh layer of snow covering the ice…who would know?

Both my daughters told me that they had fallen in recent days, victims of the deep freeze. I had slipped a few times in parking lots, but was spared the fall.  But…I should have seen it coming. I was warned.

Now, you probably think at this point that I’m to tell you that I went down in all my glory. You may have come to the conclusion that I fell victim to ice and gravity…but you’ve erred. My early morning walk with our family puggle resulted in our poor dog a slippin’ and a slidin’ and struggling to stay upright. I watched as her four little legs went in all directions. To my recollection I had never seen a dog lose its balance and come close to a fall. Dazy managed to remain vertical, and did that gallantly I might add.

There are dangers under that fluffy white snow…just ask Dazy Dew and my daughters. There are dangers under a number of things that look clean and white. So much looks blemish free, but beneath its clever disguise, disaster awaits.

As believers, we’re to take heed to the warnings of peril found in Scripture. So much hardship can be spared if we learn from God’s guide Book for learning. Experience is not always the best teacher.

In our walk through this life watch out for things that look harmless, underneath may be a smooth, glossy, piece of ice.

“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.”
