Wayne Weekly “Lane Diversion”

Driving down Makyes Rd., the road where Mars Hill has its headquarters, is generally uneventful, with the exception of severe weather in the winter. Today, however was a little more interesting.

The town of Onondaga is repaving Makyes road. This go round they are not merely putting a layer of asphalt over the top, but have removed four to six inches of previously laid pavement and are laying down a new surface on top of an older one. That’s called “milling” in the road resurfacing world. This process also salvages old asphalt to be used as aggregate for a new mix of asphalt. That reclaimed asphalt pavement is also known as RAP.  Lots of great facts on the internet!

As I drove on, a flag person instructed me to cross over into the opposite lane that had been milled. I kept looking for a place to drive without a six inch drop off, but soon realized that the flag person was directing me to just drive off my lane and down to the other! Wow, I have a vehicle that is a bit higher off the ground then some, but that seemed like quite a drop for any vehicle!

Dropping off the high road in life can happen too. We cruise along and something or someone can flag us down, grab our attention, and divert us onto a lower path. Somehow things don’t seem normal, we feel we’re in the wrong lane, we’re just not comfortable.

It helps to check and see regularly if we’re still on the high road, that we’re still in the correct lane, that we haven’t veered off our course. As Christians, we can stray from the excellent lane, and find ourselves diverted and settling for a bumpy ride.
