Wayne Weekly “Real Treasure…No Junk”

It’s clean out week on Onondaga Hill, the “mountain”, as our Morning’s host Don Giovanni calls it. On top of Onondaga Hill is where Mars Hill Park is located.

Driving into work each day carries with it an interesting view of the “mounds of stuff” that local residents have cleared out of their homes, garages and barns. I remember a number of years back when I would scan the road looking for someone’s junk in hopes of finding a treasure. The old saying goes, ‘one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”, and its true!

We spend a good portion of our lives accumulating “things”. A good number of those “things” are needed for life, or so we have been told. We do, however, seem to accumulate a lot of paraphernalia that we buy on a whim, or have purchased an item that falls into the “I just have to have that” syndrome. Now that I’m growing in years, I really am looking to get rid of things I’ve collected. I just want to be free of “stuff”, although I must admit, I occasionally find myself “looking”, but soon quickly come to my senses.

We generally think of treasures as being material in substance. But the Scriptures look at genuine treasure in a different light. In referring to the glorious gospel of Christ that we carry in our earthly bodies, Paul tells the church at Corinth:

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”                                                                                      I Corinthians 4:7

The “power of God unto salvation” is resident within our vessels of flesh and blood. What a precious treasure we hold. What a wonderful gift to be shared with others.

And there’s plenty to go around!
