Wayne Weekly “Oops…not Opps”

Yesterday I sent an email to the staff here at Mars Hill with a correction. I had written the word “not” instead of the word “now”. It changed the entire meaning of the sentence. Rather than a staff member “will now” take on a new task, the memo said the staff member “will not” take on an additional work task. After the discovery was made, I wrote a second email to staff and wrote “Opps. NOT in first line should read NOW, as corrected. What a difference one letter can make!”
I sent it. A few minutes later as I re-read the memo, I discovered rather than writing “Oops” as I intended, I wrote “Opps”. A second email left my desk correcting the previous email that was written to correct the first email! Well, that probably wasn’t necessary, but I was trying to save face.
Amazing how important letters are! I thought of the Bible verse that quotes Jesus as saying:
“For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” Matthew 5:18
A jot is the name of the least letter of an alphabet or the smallest part of a piece of writing. A tittle, rather appropriately for a word which sounds like a combination of tiny and little, is smaller still. It refers to a small stroke or point in writing or printing.
The Lord Jesus emphasized the importance of the Law by pointing out that the most miniscule part of written Law will remain as sacred and significant “till heaven and earth pass”. As Christians, we are to handle accurately the “word of truth”, being careful not to twist the meaning of verses, take them out of context, or apply them carelessly. Handling accurately the Word is responsibility that reaps reward!
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Tim.2:15
