I was out the other night with my wife and Eldon, and we went to hear my daughter Abby play violin with the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra. It is so neat to watch the players take their places on stage. They get their note from the principle violinist so all are tuned properly. Then the Maestro enters stage left to take his place in the conductors’ box. They were ready to begin. Each one of us had their specific part to play so the music would make sense in the ear of the listener. If one person was out of tune or played a wrong pitch, or came in at the wrong time, which could set a negative tone for the rest of the group. The audience would hear it too. Each player could make or break the overall performance. Well, they sounded great and the evening was a great success but it made me think of the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12-20 talks about the body of Christ being one body but having many members. Each member has a talent, a gift from God. How do we choose to use it? Do we develop it or ignore it? Do we develop it for worldly glory rather than for God? Do we choose to follow God’s will and use it to bring glory to Him? Are we happy with our talent or do we covet someone else’s. Verses 17 and 18 say, “If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as He chose”. Not only has Christ given you your talent, but he CHOSE it especially for you. You should, be honored to be gifted by God! Additionally, don’t cause discord in the body. Discord in an orchestra causes a bad performance. Likewise discord among the members of the body is a course for murmurings and gives a bad testimony. Use your talent in harmony with the body of Christ in order to …”equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Eph 4:12). Now go minister to others and I’ll see you in the Mornings!
