I think we can all agree that life is full of challenges and often times those challenges test the essence of our heart. We don't have to go it alone though, because as Pslam 46:1 states, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble." According to this psalm God is our refuge which is typically illustrated as something we run to for protection. We don't slowly half-heartedly walk to our refuge no , we run at full speed as if our very lives depend on it, which indeed they do. If we are to make God our refuge in time of need we must then persue him with all our heart, all we have within us.
Psalm 46:1 also declares God to be our strength, not our free will, determination, or anything that we find within ourselves, but in God alone do we find true strength. Do we allow ourselves to admit that alone we are weak? That all the hard work in the world can be meaningless without the strength of God. If a man is hungry and needs to eat for strength he must bring the food close enough to eat. Staring at the food from across the room does him no good, he needs it to be closer to him. In the same way we cannot expect to gain from our relationship with God if we keep him at an arms length, we need to be close to him , to have him within us. A lukewarm relationship, with God always off in the distance doesn't allow for the kind of amazing strength that only God can give, the kind that he wants to give. Do you keep God at an arms length or close enough to touch?

As we get our feet firmly planted in this new year of 2012 I'm sure you have experienced a sense of a new beginning in many ways. For me the year ended with not only remembering the events of 2011 but reflecting on all of life's journey so far. By God's grace we can remind ourselves of our hope in Jesus, where he has brought u from, and where He is taking us to. Charlie Daniels wrote in a song one time "watch where you're going, and remember where you've been". I like that because it's down to earth and good advice. By the way, it's soundly biblical too. For those of us who name the name of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior its always necessary and good to consider what we have been delivered from and that in the power Christ we can live in newness of life. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 God's Holy Spirit wrote through the hands of Paul, the apostle, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new". That is truth that we can hold on to in this new year in every trial and circumstance that we find ourselves faced with.
It's good to remember where we've been but even better to look forward to where we're headed.
Rejoice in Christ! and a belated Happy New Year.
